Tired of downloading Vista from a slow torrent? Well, good old Microsoft has gone through the trouble and solved the problem for you! If you know the right place, you can download the retail version of Vista Ultimate upgrade directly from Microsoft. Yes! It's been leaked.

It works like this. Microsoft provides an option to purchase Vista online, After payment, the customer is given a download link which enables them to directly download Windows Vista from Microsoft server. (in fact MS uses a 3rd party software distributor to host the file; DigitalRiver) These download links have beeb leaked to the web and anyone can paste the links in a download manager or a web browser to begin the download of an original, untouched version of 'Vista Ultimate Upgrade'.

There are 3 files required for download:

  • boot.wim
  • install.wim
  • X13-49120.exe

You must make the following changes before installing Windows

Close Windows installation and contact the device manufacturer for updated driver software for these devices:

o SCSI and RAID controllers: FGDSCSI (2003) SCSI Host Adapter

The compatibility report will be saved to the current Windows desktop.

not only can you buy a copy from digital river but you can order alternate media from microsoft too: https://om.one.microsoft.com/opa/Validation.aspx?StoreID=37eb3052-7e03-4ce7-bee0-7f8e478f92c9&LocaleCode=en-us&JavaScriptOn=yes

And presumably it's a real CD, I won't know until it gets here but the real cd's come with real part numbers that for 10 bucks you can get your serial from microsoft if you lose it.

Oh and digital river will refund your money within 30 days of the purchase date.

As for the question about making it bootable you need to use imagex in the windows automated installation kit (waik) google for it it's on the MS website -- good luck I downloaded the .img file they distribute it as, had to mount it with daemontools and then the msi file was corrupt and wouldn't finish installing. its almost a gig and all you need supposedly is imagex which couldn't be more than 40K. This made me furious.
