Tomb Raider : Anniversary

Posted by TEAM FILEnetworks | 6/03/2007 | | 18 Comments »

Here we go again folks. The latest Tomb Raider game has hit the torrent sites like wildfire. It's been uploaded even before the North American release.

Inspired by the first Tomb Raider videogame, originally released in 1996, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a totally new 2006 adventure for Lara, faithfully preserving the elements which made the original Tomb Raider such a classic. Using an enhanced "Tomb Raider Legend" game engine, the graphics, technology and physics bring Lara's adventure and pursuit of a mystical artefact known only as the Scion up to today's technology standards and offer gamers a completely new gameplay experience. The puzzles are now more in depth and incorporate environmental interaction and physics driven solutions. The level design and flow of gameplay are inspired by the original videogame making Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary a brand new experience in gaming, while still invoking the nostalgia of the first adventure in Tomb Raiding.

    rukmal,
I have a ASUS Nvidia Geforce 6800 card which cost about LKR 15k and it can play almost all current games on medium/high settings. But this card is considered to be out of date in most gaming communities so better go for a newer one.

If you are planning to use the PC for gaming, i suggest you go for a DX10 card to be future proof. Although there are not many games out there that support DX10 as of yet, in a few months all games will come out for DX10 (most probably with a 9.0c compatibility mode too).

As DX10 is available exclusively for Windows Vista, you'll need to have that installed too. Then you will require a minimum of 1.5GB of system RAM to play games smoothly as Vista requires around 400-500MB RAM to run (aero enabled).

Cards that support DX10 include Nvidia Geforce 8000 series and ATI Radeon HD X2000 series.
High end cards of these series normally cost quite a lot Ex- Geforce 8800GTX is around LKR 50k)
so try to find a mid range card such as Geforce 8500GT.

If you cant afford one of them, i suggest you go for a Nvidia 7000 series card such as 7600GT (better), 7300GT. Make sure you dont buy any nvidia card which has LE, SE or XT in the model name or anything which has Turbocache technology. These are lite editions which have downgraded features.
If you are going for ATI, dont go for anything below X1600.

Like i said Geforce 6000 series and ATI X1000 low range, X series will play most current games fairly well but they wont be future proof.

You can compare the features of each card here:

    Nvidia:

    ATI:
    http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/131

Better if you can get the card through somebody from a foreign country such as Singapore as the cost will be much less than in Singapore. Good luck.

    Thanks you very much

I appreciate your help very much
I cant afford a big money
so i'll go for a Nvidia 7000 series.
Do you know how much will it cost (roughly) ?

  6. Lightning_Struck_Tower // 6/04/2007 05:15:00 PM

    rukmal,
MSI Nvidia 7300LE Turbocache is there for even Rs 8000 but dont get than coz it's a 64-bit crap card which will uses system RAM for video(Turbocache means it will uses system RAM once it's limited VRAM is consumed). Dont buy a 7300 if it's not a 7300GT. Try 7600GS/GT- might be around 17k-20k i guess.

If you find 7600 price too high i would suggest getting ATI X1300 Pro which would cost you around 14-15K @ EPSI (EPSI buggers overcharge you so better if you could get that from some place else, but havent seen that card anywhere except @ EPSI)

Also dont buy the Geforce 6500 which is nowhere near the Geforce 6600 and its actually a 32bit it cards meaning even the simplest of games will make it cry.

    rukmal,
that's a good card. It's one of the best cards in the 7000 series.
    How much does it cost?

OC in the name means over clocked; the clock speed of this card has been increased above the average 7950 card so it should give better performance. BGF is a good board designer so you should not have any problems for a while with this.

    Hi Rukmal,
It's bit hard to find high end cards like GeForce 7950GT here in Sri Lanka. Even if its available it would definitely cost more than 20,000 LKR
Recently I found that MSI GeForce 7600GS 512MB (GDDR2, PCI-E) - which is a very decent card - is available for around 18,000 LKR.

If you're looking to buy(in SL) a low cost gaming card go for GeForce 7300GT. It would only cost around 7,500 LKR (256MB) and has decent performace for the price. Also Radeon X1300 Pro is available at 12,000 LKR price tag but it doesnt worth it compared to the performance & overclockability of GeForce 7300GT. However DONT ever go for commonly available and more cheap GeForce 7100GS or 7300LE which are dissapointing in performance.

However if you can buy from US (through on-line or whatever) you can find solid cards such as one you mentioned (GF 7950GT), GeForce 7600GT or even the best DX10 mid-range card 8600GT for a decent price.

    Thanks LST
    Thanks Tin.

how about ATI X1600 PRO 512MB?
    is it good ?
we can buy it for around 13500/=

    GEFORCE 7600 GT 256MB for 14500/=

I just checked them from ebay.

  11. Lightning_Struck_Tower // 6/14/2007 09:58:00 PM

    Rukmal,
Are you sure you can buy those cards for the mentioned price? I believe you are in SL? If you are buying through eBay, you'll have to bear the shipping cost too i guess?

Anyways 7600 GS (not GT) is available for Rs 14000-15000 even in SL now. 7600GS and GT are both good and GT version will have that extra firepower.

X1600Pro 512MB is a decent card but make sure you get the 128-bit version. Some manufacturers make 32-bit and 64-bit versions which are bottlenecked by the low bandwidth memory interface. Buy only if the card is 128bit.

    Thanks LST

Those price are with shipping charges

    Thanks a lot

Hey guys is a 256 MB GeForce FX5500 good for this game?

  14. Unknown // 6/27/2007 10:26:00 AM

    Hi Thiru,

Yes you should be able to play with mid-high settings without any problem since GF FX5500 supports shader model 2.0.

  15. Lightning_Struck_Tower // 6/27/2007 05:58:00 PM

    Thiru,
Tin is correct. FX5500 should play this game without any problems.

  16. DigitalTV // 7/16/2007 12:30:00 PM

    Tin /LST

From where i can buy GeForce 7300GT card around 7,500 LKR?

  17. Unknown // 7/17/2007 04:34:00 PM

    Hi Rukmal,
It was there @ Unity Plaza, Col.04.

And take my word, GF 7300GT is probably the best card you can buy at this price tag at the moment (in SL).

    Pointless - crack doesn't exist.
