In almost all of our troubleshooting articles, we advise gamers to install the latest version of Microsoft DirectX. DirectX is a collection of Application Programming Interfaces (API) commonly used in PC game and multimedia development. It’s been in use since 1995 and and by today has become a standard in the Windows based PC industry - A version of DirectX comes installed with all Microsoft operating systems by default. However, you cannot always rely on the version that came with windows for ever. Microsoft often releases updates to DX and to play latest games without hiccups, you’ll need to update to the latest available runtime. In case you are confused by the number of different DX setups showing up on Microsoft Download Center, here’s a download link to the latest available monthly runtime as of 2/17/2011.

Unlike in our previous posts, this article does not feature the redistributable, standalone, offline installer for DX. The download link below is pointed to the web installer hosted on MS download center. For version buffs, this is DirectX 9.0c v9.29.1973 released on 11/30/2010 (November 2010). It’s compatible with Windows 7, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows XP Service Pack 3.
