A couple of years ago, private trackers were a lesser known subject among the masses unless you were a hard core BitTorrent user. Flash forward to today and the situation is a lot different – with the advent of BitTorrent discussion forums, invite sites and P2P blogs (such as this one :p), private trackers have become more accessible to the general public. While some ague that increased popularity is harmful to these communities, new mediums have no doubt helped trackers grow and gain new members resulting in more activity and donations. Today’s post is about yet another online resource for BitTorrent & tracker news; /r/trackers. /r/trackers is a SubReddit on the social news website Reddit.com – for those unfamiliar with the terminology, it’s basically a subcategory dedicated to torrent news. Not only does it serve as a news aggregator and a place to comment and discuss on torrent related topics, it also has an invite offers section through which readers can request for membership on 25+ private torrent sites.

In a world where BitTorrent is considered evil by most of the big media, it’s not very common for a major social news site to have a separate category for BitTorrent related news (and with over 5300 readers adding the Subreddit to their front page so far, it appears to be well received too). This is not the first time Reddit is closely associated with file sharing - it was only last year Reddit members founded BaconBits, a private tracker for Redditors only. However, it must be noted that all these are user generated content to which there is no direct involvement by the services’ management. Still, it’s good to see BitTorrent & P2P being ‘accepted’ topics on a major (and one of the fast growing) news sites in the world.

Coming back to the topic at hand, viewing and using /r/trackers is pretty straightforward even if you have never used Reddit before. It’s basically a news feed where torrent news from various external sources are aggregated. Users can comment, discuss, up vote or down vote the stories to make them popular. In addition to news, you can find user created Q&A threads, opinions, open signup news and other general discussions about private trackers here.

If you are interested in private tracker invites, /r/trackers has a separate section for invite giveaways. If you look under the ‘Current Invite Offers’ section located in right sidebar, you will see a list of trackers to which invitations are available. Some of these are offered by Reddit users while some are conducted as official recruitment by tracker staff themselves. At time of this post, there were offers for nearly 30 different trackers available.

Use the links below to access /r/trackers. Registration is not required to view the content – however, you will need a valid Reddit account (which is free) to comment, submit or vote on stories.

This Subreddit has a separate IRC channel which allows real time conversations with fellow readers:

P.S.- We saw a lot of our articles being aggregated on /r/trackers – kudos to whoever added and voted on them to make them popular :)
